OpenAI Expands AI Infrastructure with Stargate Facilities Across Multiple States

OpenAI is accelerating its artificial intelligence capabilities through the Stargate initiative, a partnership with Oracle and Softbank to construct massive computing facilities. The flagship site in Abilene, Texas—already operational in part—will become the world's largest AI computing cluster upon completion, housing hundreds of thousands of specialized chips like Nvidia's GB200.

Two additional Texas locations are planned alongside sites in New Mexico, Ohio, and an undisclosed Midwest state. The Abilene complex alone requires 900 megawatts of power, raising questions about sustainable energy use in the arid region. Sam Altman acknowledged the environmental trade-offs, stating the project currently relies on gas but aims to transition to alternative power sources.
